What we learned from NeurIPS 2019 data
NeurIPS has quadrupled in the last five years. This year, we had 6,743 submissions after filtering (down to 6,614 at notification time), amounting to more than 20,000 reviews written by more than 4,500 reviewers. The overall acceptance rate this year was 21.6%, corresponding to 1428 accepted papers. Given this overwhelming growth, we decided to take a look at the data and see what we can learn from it...
R & Python: A Love Story
Many Data Science teams today are bilingual, leveraging both R and Python in their work. While both languages have unique strengths, teams frequently struggle to use them together. To help Data Science teams solve these problems, and in line with our ongoing mission to support the open-source data science ecosystem, we’ve made the love story between R and Python a happier one...
A new way to make quadratic equations easy
Many former algebra students have painful memories of struggling to memorize the quadratic formula. A new way to derive it, overlooked for 4,000 years, is so simple it eliminates the need...
The Data Analytics program is for people who are starting from the very beginning. Learn how to scrape, collect and analyze data, use SQL and Tableau, and get an introduction to Python. We'll get you a job within six months of graduating or you'll get your tuition back.
Predicting Shelter Dog Outcomes
My goal was to give every single shelter dog a chance to find a home by using Data Science tools to help shelters customize their adoption efforts to maximize their adoptions. By using the methods discussed below, I was able to discern which dogs were less likely to be adopted and measures that can be taken to increase their chances of adoption...

Visualizing the Geometric and Harmonic Means
Long after I learned how to calculate the geometric and harmonic means, I was still unclear about what exactly they were doing for me. I ended up clarifying this to myself by generating a series of visualizations which I’ll show you in this post...
